CRMSE Colloquium

John Yochelson, President, Building Engineering and Science Talent (BEST)

What’s Working in K-12 STEM Education in San Diego County: Implications for SDSU

Friday, October 17, 2008, 12:30-1:30 PM, 6495 Alvarado Road, Suite 128.
The talk will be followed by coffee in the same room

Abstract: John Yochelson, along with his co-author, Gina Gianzero, will share
findings from eight months of fieldwork focused on improving science,
technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. This work examined
interventions for students and teachers, such as school-based initiatives,
enrichment outside the classroom, programs to build teacher capacity, and efforts
at promoting system-wide integration. BEST’s Guide to Effective Programs was
recently published by the San Diego Foundation. They will focus on how San
Diego State University’s programs measure up and what we can learn from others.

CRMSE Distinguished Speakers Series

Deborah Ball and Hyman Bass

Deborah Ball and Hyman Bass gave joint talks at SDSU on June 5 and 6, 2008:

Thursday, June 5, 2008, 4:30-5:30 PM, Arts & Letters 201:

"Improving U.S. Mathematics Education: History, Myths, and Strategies"

The National Mathematics Panel has just issued a report responding to the charge: What is known about the teaching and learning of mathematics up to algebra that would enable more children to be successful in algebra? The report suggests that, although we have made substantial progress in some domains, we still have a long way to go in building the knowledge base we need to improve the quality of instruction and students’ learning. This report is one more entry into several decades of critique and aspiration regarding the quality and level of mathematics learning of our nation’s youth. In this session we will provide an overview of the issues that have framed both the problems and efforts to address them. We will highlight patterns in that history that have impeded progress, identify key strategies for significant improvement, and discuss what it would take to deploy them.

Reception was from 3:45-4:30 PM on the Arts & Letters patio.

Friday, June 6, 2008, 10:00-11:00 AM, Arts & Letters 101:

"Proving the Impossible"

Students' work on an impossibility proof will be used to investigate three features of helping students learn to prove mathematical claims: task design; the creation of social and intellectual environment; and the development of specialized language.

Reception was from 9:15-10:00 AM on the Arts & Letters patio.

Speaker Biographies

Deborah Ball served on the National Mathematics Advisory Panel, convened in 2006 by President George W. Bush, and is Dean of the University of Michigan's School of Education. She has served on several national and international commissions and panels focused on policy initiatives and the improvement of education.

Hyman Bass received the prestigious 2006 National Medal of Science, and is a past president of the American Mathematical Society and the International Commission on Mathematical Instruction. He formerly chaired the Mathematical Sciences Education Board at the National Research Council, and the Committee on Education of the American Mathematical Society.

CRMSE Gatherings

These "wine-and-cheese" events, open to all CRMSE members and friends, are informal meetings taking place on a Friday late afternoon during which we share news, celebrate new projects and members, and get to know some of what is going on in CRMSE projects.

September 26, 2008:  The next "wine-and-cheese" event starts at 3:00 pm in the Suite 128 (6475 Alvarado Rd.). We will be welcoming new members and associate members; and Joanne Lobato, Susan Nickerson, Chris Rasmussen, and Sam Shen will be discussing their recent trip to China and Korea. This event is open to all CRMSE members and friends.

More "wine-and-cheese" events will be held in the future. Information about these events will appear here. These events will be open to all CRMSE members and friends.
